A 24 year-old Malawian woman has hanged herself in Nkhatabay district after her husband took a second wife.
Sources say the woman, Mary Chiumia, was married to 27 year-old Kelvin Chiumia but recently the man decided to take a second wife.
This did not go well with the woman. On Tuesday she decided to hang herself in her house but was rescued by her husband who found her battling for life.
He immediately took her to Nkhatabay District Hospital where she later died while receiving treatment.
The matter was reported to police who visited the scene of the incident.
According to police, a post-mortem showed that the woman died due to strangulation.
Meanwhile, police in the district are appealing to the general public to solve their marriage differences amicably or visit Victim Support Units that are available at every police station in the country so that deaths of this nature should be avoided.
The deceased hailed from Chibaka village in the area of T/A Mankhambira in Nkhatabay district.
