The Media Network on Tobacco (MNT) has commended the Tobacco Commission (TC) for its tireless effort in fighting child labour and protecting children in tobacco-growing communities.
MNT says the Commission has shown strong commitment and leadership in ensuring that tobacco production in Malawi does not come at the expense of children’s education, health and future.
Speaking in commemoration of World Tobacco Growers Day observed on October 28, MNT President Alfred Chauwa said TC has been at the forefront of promoting child protection and keeping children in school.
“The Tobacco Commission is doing a commendable job in the fight against child labour. Their tireless efforts on the ground are making a real difference in tobacco-growing districts,” said Chauwa.
He said through its continued engagement with growers, stakeholders and communities, the Commission is helping to raise awareness on the importance of education and safeguarding children’s wellbeing.
Chauwa added that MNT will continue to support and complement TC’s efforts to ensure that Malawi’s tobacco industry remains responsible, ethical and child-labour free.
“Tobacco growing should not come at the cost of a child’s future. What TC is doing ensures children remain in class where they belong,” he said.
MNT has since called on all stakeholders to rally behind the Tobacco Commission’s efforts in building a tobacco industry that protects both livelihoods and children’s rights.
