Mumba wants MCP overhaul

MCP cannot lose an election and expect the same bosses to lead it back to State House in 2030. That is the message Vitumbiko Mumba is bringing to the party, demanding a complete leadership shake-up after its 2025 defeat.

Mumba says those who presided over the Malawi Congress Party’s loss of government must step aside if the party hopes to win back power in the next general elections.

He wants both the party’s top leadership and National Executive Committee (NEC) replaced, arguing that keeping the same people in charge could cost MCP another election.

Mumba, who contested the September 16, 2025 general elections alongside party leader Lazarus Chakwera, believes the defeat should force MCP to rethink who leads it and how it operates.

He argues that the party cannot expect a different result in 2030 if it sticks with the leadership that failed to retain power in 2025.

However, Mumba says the changes must follow the party’s constitution and established procedures.

He has proposed that MCP convene a convention as soon as possible to elect new office-bearers, giving members the opportunity to choose leaders they believe can rebuild the party and strengthen its chances of returning to government.

The proposed overhaul would also target the NEC, which plays a central role in directing the party’s political and organisational affairs.

Mumba’s call puts the spotlight on accountability within MCP as the party grapples with the consequences of its electoral defeat and the challenge of rebuilding public support.

With the 2030 elections approaching, the party faces a critical choice: retain its current leadership or give new faces a chance to lead its fight for a return to State House.
