George Zulu’s attempt to challenge Alfred Gangata’s victory in the Lilongwe City Mtandire-Mtsiriza Constituency has hit another delay.
The High Court has stayed proceedings until the Supreme Court of Appeal determines Gangata’s appeal.
Zulu, who contested the constituency on a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ticket in the September 16, 2025 General Election, petitioned the High Court challenging Gangata’s victory.
But while Zulu’s petition seeks to question the election outcome, Gangata’s appeal has now put the substantive hearing on hold.
Gangata, who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Region Vice President and Minister of Sports, had appealed against an earlier High Court decision allowing Zulu’s petition to proceed.
His lawyer, Khumbo Soko, confirmed that the petition proceedings will await the Supreme Court of Appeal’s determination of the matter.
The latest development means Zulu will have to wait longer before his challenge against Gangata’s parliamentary victory can proceed in the High Court.
For now, Gangata remains the declared winner and continues to serve as Member of Parliament for the constituency while the legal process runs its course.
The dispute stems from the closely contested 2025 parliamentary election in which Zulu challenged the result declared in favour of Gangata.
Gangata is now turning to the country’s highest appellate court to contest the decision that allowed the petition to move forward, leaving Zulu’s challenge temporarily frozen.
The Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision on Gangata’s appeal will therefore determine what happens next to Zulu’s petition.
