Medical Council of Malawi suspends Doctors, reveals a series of professional misconduct cases
The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) has taken disciplinary action against several medical practitioners, suspending some from duty and issuing penalties over a range of professional misconduct cases uncovered during investigations.
In a statement, the Council outlined multiple incidents involving both qualified doctors and interns, raising concerns about adherence to medical standards and patient safety in the country.
Among the cases, the Council cited an intern who allegedly misled authorities by falsely claiming to have successfully completed their internship.
In another incident, an individual was found to have conducted a postmortem examination without the required qualifications or authorization.
The Council also pointed to administrative lapses at Nkhoma Mission Hospital, where a director was accused of engaging in conduct deemed inappropriate and linked to poor management of staff.
Additionally, some doctors were reported to have been operating private clinics without the knowledge or approval of the Medical Council, a violation of regulatory requirements.
In a more serious case involving patient care, two specialist doctors were faulted for failing to properly manage a woman who experienced severe bleeding shortly after childbirth.
The Council indicated that the mismanagement contributed to the patient’s death.
Meanwhile, Peter Thom was penalized for failing to notify the Council that he was no longer associated with LION Clinic after leaving his medical role.
Another case involved Dr. Bernard, who was criticized for failing to promptly diagnose a bowel obstruction and for not adequately documenting clinical findings.
The Council also took action against Dr. Wirrad, who was found to be practicing at MASM in Katoto without a valid license permitting him to operate in a private capacity.
In a separate incident, an intern identified as Dr. Daniel was cited for administering morphine without consulting a supervising senior doctor, resulting in excessive dosage and complications for the patient.
The Medical Council of Malawi has emphasized the importance of professionalism, proper licensing, and adherence to clinical procedures, warning that it will continue to take firm action against practitioners who fail to meet required standards.
“The Council remains committed to protecting the public and ensuring that all medical practitioners operate within the ethical and professional guidelines of the profession,” the statement reads.
The developments highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining healthcare standards, as authorities intensify oversight to safeguard patient welfare across the country.
