The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has given Lilongwe Chilobwe legislator Lawrence Chaziya seven days to issue a written apology for allegedly linking the party’s president and Second Vice-President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana to loan defaults under the Mega Farms project.
In a letter dated February 25, 2026, signed by Secretary General Linda Limbe, the party demands “an unconditional apology, in writing, within seven days, acknowledging your mistake and clearing our Party President’s name.”
The letter states that Chaziya made remarks in Parliament associating Chihana with a list of loan defaulters under the Mega Farms initiative.
Aford describes the statement as “baseless and malicious,” saying the legislator should have been aware of the identity of the Second Vice-President of the country.
The party further says the First Deputy Speaker intervened and demanded a withdrawal of the remarks and that a line minister also responded on the matter during the sitting.
According to the letter, the Mega Farms project was implemented under the administration of former president Lazarus Chakwera.
Aford states that Chihana is a fertilizer supplier operating in Malawi and across Africa and argues that it is implausible he would seek a fertilizer loan given his standing in the industry.
The letter warns that failure to comply with the demand within seven days “will compel us to take unspecified action against you.” It was copied to the Speaker of Parliament and the Leader of Opposition.
