National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has apologised after some of its customers were mistakenly charged additional fees when using other banks’ point-of-sale (POS) machines.
The incorrect charges occurred between February 23 and 25, 2026, and the bank says it is reversing the transactions and will refund all affected customers in full.
In public communication, the bank said the charges were applied on top of the transaction amounts during the three days.
NBM indicated that the affected transactions involved customers who used POS machines belonging to other banks.
The financial institution said its technical team is currently working on reversing all the incorrect fees linked to the specified dates.
According to the bank, every customer affected by the erroneous charges will receive a full refund once the reversal process is completed.
The bank expressed regret over the development and acknowledged the inconvenience the charges may have caused to customers.
NBM said it has taken steps to address the matter and ensure that all affected customers are reimbursed accordingly.
