Speaker issues summons for SONA, budget meeting

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sameer Suleman, has summoned all members of parliament and appointed ministers to attend the second meeting of the 52nd session of parliament. 

This meeting is scheduled to take place at the Parliament Chamber in Lilongwe and will commence with a State of the Nation Address delivered by His Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The summons is issued under Section 59, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of Malawi, which stipulates that members of parliament are required to attend meetings of the National Assembly at the appointed time. 

This constitutional provision underscores the importance of parliamentary proceedings and the need for members to be present.

The meeting is set to begin on Friday, 13th February 2026, at 10:00 hours in the morning and will adjourn on Friday, 10th April 2026. 

Members and ministers are required to arrive on Thursday, 12th February 2026, in preparation for the meeting.

The Speaker has invoked Section 159, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, which grants him the power to summon members and ministers to attend parliamentary meetings. 

This power is exercised to ensure that the business of parliament is conducted efficiently and effectively.

The State of the Nation Address is a crucial event in Malawi’s parliamentary calendar, providing an opportunity for the President to outline the government’s priorities and progress. 

The address is expected to set the tone for the 2026/2027 budget meeting of parliament.

Given under the Speaker’s hand on this 12th day of January 2026, the summons is a directive that all members and ministers are expected to comply with. 

The Speaker’s office has emphasized the importance of attendance, underscoring the significance of the upcoming meeting.
