The upcoming Power Institute for East and Southern Africa, PIESA, conference is expected to position Malawi as a regional energy hub while unlocking new solutions to the country’s persistent electricity challenges.
The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi, ESCOM, will host the conference from 23 to 24 February 2026 in Lilongwe, drawing experts in power, technology, and innovation from across Africa.
Director of Optic Fiber Communications at ESCOM, Stella Senti, said the gathering brings together leading minds in the energy sector, creating a rare opportunity for Malawi to directly engage with specialists shaping the future of electricity generation and digital transformation.
“The conference is actually putting together experts from across Africa in terms of power, technology, and innovation and therefore it is actually very powerful for the nation because now Malawi will become the centre of the energy sector,” said Senti.
She said the conference is expected to promote knowledge exchange, foster partnerships, and inspire innovative approaches to addressing energy deficits, infrastructure gaps, and the need for sustainable solutions.
According to Senti, hosting the event signals confidence in Malawi’s growing role in regional energy discussions and provides a platform for collaboration between utilities, policymakers, investors, and technology experts.
The outcomes of the conference are anticipated to contribute towards improved efficiency, expanded electricity access, and stronger regional cooperation, key elements in driving economic growth and improving lives.
Meanwhile, Old Mutual Investment Group has donated K10 million towards the hosting of the conference, which Senti has described as timely.
Speaking during the symbolic sponsorship presentation on Friday in Blantyre, Old Mutual Investment Group Managing Director, Mphatso Kasalika, said the company’s support reflects its belief in collaboration and sustainable energy development.
“Old Mutual believes in the power of collaboration and the importance of sustainable energy solutions. We recognise the energy sector’s vital role in driving economic growth and environmental stewardship,” said Kasalika.
Kasalika further said the support for the conference reflects the company’s commitment to helping address the energy deficit in the country as PIESA serves as an important platform for knowledge exchange and innovation.
