The trial of individuals suspected of vandalizing and indecently assaulting government workers during a protest in Lilongwe is set to resume today, with the prosecution expected to present its case.
The accused, identified as members of a group known as “zikwanje” (young men), are facing charges related to their alleged involvement in the violent incident, which disrupted public order and caused harm to civil servants.
According to Prescort Mwaiulipo, the lead prosecutor, the trial is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am before Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe, who will preside over the case.
Mwaiulipo expressed confidence in the prosecution’s case, stating that the evidence gathered so far suggests the accused are guilty of the crimes they are charged with, and that justice will be served.
The prosecutor emphasized that the case is being taken seriously, and the government is committed to ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable for their actions.
The trial is seen as a test of the government’s resolve to protect public property and ensure that civil servants can carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or harm.
