The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has announced a significant price reduction to K840 per kilogram, equivalent to K42,000 per 50 kilogram bag, following a surge in demand at the previous price of K55,000 per 50 kilogram bag.
According to a statement released today, NFRA says effective 10th February 2026, it will resume purchasing Maize at K840 per kilogram following a significant decrease in Maize price across the country.
As per NFRA guidelines, purchases will be strictly enforced with a minimum order quantity of twenty 50-kilogram bags of maize (1 metric tonne), ensuring all maize meets the required quality standards.
“Maize will be purchased at a new price of MWK840 per kilogram equivalent to K42,000 per 50 kg bag, following market research which has shown significant decrease in Maize prices across the country” reads the letter.
The agency has further said Maize will be purchased at all NFRA depots nationwide except in Lilongwe where the agency will use Chilambula ADMARC.
As the Agency will proceed with buying maize on first come first served basis, the body has also notified that it will suspend purchase upon the attainment of the established procurement target for the current year.
On 20th January 2026, NFRA announced the buying price of K1,100 per Kilogram equivalent to 55 thousand kwacha per 50 kg bag of Maize.
