The government has reinstated William Liabunya as Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) nearly two years after his suspension.

His reinstatement comes after the Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre acquitted him and two other Egenco executives of all charges against them earlier this week.

Liabunya, together with Director of Corporate Affairs Videlia Mluwira and Director of Finance Hophan Chisasa, had faced allegations of theft of K3.4 billion, money laundering, and abuse of office.

Hwoever, Chief Resident Magistrate Paul Chiotcha cleared the three after the state told the court it had no evidence to proceed with the case.

The court ruling has paved the way for Liabunya to resume leadership at EGENCO, resuming oversight of the company’s operations and projects.

Meanwhile, speaking to the local media, Liabunya expressed his satisfaction with the court ruling and his reinstatement.

“It gives me joy and it provides me with an opportunity to serve the nation in my area of expertise,” said Liabunya.

Liabunya will take over from Maxon Chitawo, who replaced him in 2023 after his suspension. Chitawo has earlier this month been seconded to Mzuzu University (Mzuni).
