UTM Members of Parliament (MPs) have been kicked out of Government WhatsApp groups after they voted against a proposed bill which is being supported by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
UTM led by Vice President Saulos Chilima is a member of the ruling Tonse Alliance together with MCP which is led by President Lazarus Chakwera.
However, Ntcheu Bwanje Member of Parliament Alexander Chilikumtima told Parliament this morning that they are surprised that they have been removed from a Government WhatsApp group.
He did not mention reasons why they have been kicked out and how many MPs have been removed.
The removal of the MPs comes after UTM MPs voted together with opposition MPs in rejecting a report on the proposed Banking Act amendment bill in Parliament. The opposition MPs expressed concern that the bill is targeting certain individuals in the banking sector.
The relationship between UTM and MCP appears to have deteriorated over the past few months.
Currently, UTM leader Chilima is not being delegated his duties as Malawi Vice President following allegations that he received K290 million bribe from businessperson Zuneth Sattar to facilitate awarding of contracts to Sattar’s companies.
