Police say the man who was shot dead in Mchinji yesterday is a 31-year-old Zimbabwean national, Chisomo Vitalis Masukwedza, who is believed to have been shot by fellow Zimbabweans allegedly connected to his brother.
This is according to police spokesperson for Central West Region, Alfred Chimthere, who was speaking to the local media.
A police report which we have seen also confirms the same. The report says the shooting happened yesterday at around 14:00 hours at Nantchola – Likasi forest along Mchinji-Lilongwe road.
According to the report by Mchinji Police Station, Masukwedza, who was a resident of Biwi Township in Lilongwe died after he got shot on the forehead by unknown person who used unknown type of pistol rifle.
Masukwedza at the time was in his Mercedes Benz registration number NN 856 black coming from Lilongwe heading to Mchinji.
He was together with a 29-year-old girlfriend and two unknown Zimbabweans believed to be friends of his brother named Padon Masukwedza.
The girlfriend told police that yesterday morning the victim was called by his brother Padon Masukwedza that there were two Zimbabweans friends to Padon who had a car problem along Mchinji road.
Padon allegedly asked his younger brother now to assist them since they were stranded.
Masukwedza picked one of the Zimbabweans along bypass road and the other at Engene filling station at Njerwa and started their way to Mchinji to maintain the breakdown vehicle.
“Upon reaching at Nantchola-Likasi forest, the deceased was shot on the forehead and died at the spot in his car,” reads part of the police report..
The matter was immediately reported to police whereby scene of crime was immediately visited. Police found the girlfriend at nearby railway houses where she escaped to.
“The body of the deceased was found lying dead on both drivers seat and passengers seat whilst in a pool of blood.
“Upon searching at the scene, two empty cartilages plus two live ammunition of pistol rifle were found at the scene and a small black jumbo with white powder suspected to be drug,” reads part of the report.
The body was taken to Mchinji District Hospital mortuary pending postmortem and Police are investigating the matter to arrest the suspects.
