A Petroda Malawi Limited tanker has leaked fuel after the driver lost control of the vehicle and it swerved into a bush along the Chikwawa Road.
The accident happened near Milare Police Station in Blantyre and involved a tanker registration number PE 1233.
Due to the accident, the tanker got damaged and fuel started leaking uncontrollably.
Residents from surrounding areas took advantage. They went out with their buckets and bottles to get fuel from the tanker.
Police have since expressed concern that the residents are storing the fuel in their homes which is a public hazard as the product is highly flammable.
Blantyre police publicist, Peter Mchiza, has told the local media that a recovery tanker has since taken over the fuel which is set to be delivered to the Lower Shire.
