Vice President Saulos Chilima today visited UTM’s Youth Director Bon Kalindo who is on remand at Zomba Maximum Prison.
Spokesperson for Chilima, Milward Tobias and Public Relations Officer for the Department of Prisons, Chimwemwe Mike Shaba confirmed the development.
“It is true the vice president visited this morning but he was only here for less than an hour,” said Shaba.
Commenting on the matter, UTM’s Director of Publicity, Joseph Chidanti Malunga said as a party they are worried and concerned that one of them has been arrested but that will not stop UTM from moving forward and it will not affect the line-up of their activities.
“These are politically oriented issues but it’s justification depends on the angle from which you look at it, the police can shed more light on that but this is one of those things we think of as political persecution,” said Malunga.
Kalindo, popularly known as Winiko is expected to appear at Zomba Magistrate Court tomorrow (Monday) for bail ruling. Chief Resident Magistrate Mzondi Mvula said he needs more time to thoroughly look into the arguments raised by both parties therefore he couldn’t make his ruling on Friday.
Kalindo was arrested on Thursday last week for allegedly insulting the president which is contrary to Section 4 of protected flags, emblem and names Act as well as disorderly conduct at a police station contrary to Section 153(1) of Police Act.
The Mulanje South legislator allegedly committed the crimes at Balaka Police Station where he went to demand for the release of Chilima’s two personal aides, Kushi Unyolo and Joshua Valera who were arrested for “acting suspiciously” at Chiwanja Cha Ayao launch at Mmanga Primary School Ground in Balaka, earlier this month.
