A Standard 3 pupil aged 7 has died in Mangochi after he was hit and run over by a truck belonging to Chibuku Products Limited.
The incident occurred on the morning of October 6 around 11am at St Augustine 3 full primary school along Mangochi-Monkey-Bay road.
The learner has been identified as Akbar Makiyi of Saiti Kadzuwa village, Traditional Authority Mponda.
The truck in question, a Mercedes-Benz registration number BS 3194 belonging to Chibuku Products Ltd, was being driven by Steven Omar (46) of Chapotera village, Traditional Authority Kuntaja in Blantyre from the direction of Mangochi boma heading to Monkey-Bay.
Mangochi police deputy spokesperson Amina Daudi told Malawi24 that upon arrival at the primary school the driver hit and run over a young male pedestrian Akbar who was crossing from right to left hand side of the road.
Following the impact, Akbar sustained multiple fractures on the hip and back bone and died on the spot.
The driver escaped unhurt and the motor vehicle had no damages but an angry assemblage of pupils rushed to the scene where they stoned the motor vehicle and damaged its windscreen, right and left view mirrors as well as the driver and passenger’s door glasses.
The driver is behind bars at Mangochi police awaiting trial for the offence of causing death by reckless driving which is contrary to section 126 (4c) of the Road Traffic Act.
Meanwhile, police in the district are reminding drivers to observe road safety measures in order to avoid such accidents.
The police have also condemned the barbaric acts by the unidentified pupils who vandalized the truck.
