A headteacher who suffered broken legs in a road accident has hanged himself after being discharged from a hospital.

In an interview with Malawi24, Dowa police spokesperson Richard Kaponda identified the headteacher as Briay Mughogho who was teaching at Mpalankhwali Primary School in Dowa.

According to Kaponda, the teacher who did not leave a suicide note was involved in a road accident prior to the suicide and all his two legs were broken.

“He was admitted to Dowa District Hospital and later discharged from the health facility. He went to his home village with Plaster of Paris (POP) on both legs,” Kaponda said.

The headteacher was later left in his house alone when the relatives went out for other duties.

“When they returned, they saw the headteacher’s body dangling to the roof of his house after he hanged himself using a shoelace,” Kaponda said.

Postmortem conducted at Dowa District Hospital indicated that the death was due to hypoxia, secondary to strangulation.

The deceased hailed from Missi village, Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa district.
