Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Malawi have put on hold plans to demonstrate against the failed June by-elections.
The decision to have the by-elections postponed to a later date by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) angered many stakeholders including the CSOs who vowed to take their anger to the streets.
But the CSOs have disclosed that the planned demonstrations will not take place as the commission plans to meet to set date for the by-elections.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa disclosed that the approved 2017/18 budget is to support the electoral body to hold by-elections in Malawi.
“The budget has allocated funds to MEC for the operations which include by-elections and preparation for the 2019 general elections,” said Mwafulirwa.
MEC cancelled plans to have the by-elections a few months ago due to lack of funding.
