Wife beater dies after setting fire to his house

A 44 year-old man who was wanted by the police for assaulting his wife in Nkhatabay died on Wednesday after setting fire to his house while he was inside it.

The man identified as Hudson Msukwa set fire to his house at Gomanjira village, T/A Timbili in Nkhatabay district.

The wife to the deceased told police that for several times, the man had been assaulting her and that matters of such nature were being handled by the village head and members of the community policing.

“The deceased once again assaulted the wife including their children and this prompted her to report the matter to police. At police, she was referred to Nkhatabay District Hospital for medication and later she was given a summoning letter for the man,” said Police.

Upon being issued with the summons, which indicated that he should report at Nkhatabay police, the man got angry and immediately left home for beer drinking within the village.

He came back home in the evening and chased his family out of the house.

“At around 3 am whilst inside the house, he set it on fire and later he suffocated and eventually died,” police said.

A post-mortem conducted by medical personnel showed that the man died due to suffocation.

The deceased hailed from Mwandisi village, Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa district.
