…Two of the suspects are prison escapees
Police in Mangochi have arrested three people for stealing over K15 million from several banks and other companies in the district.
Police said two of the suspects were already on their wanted list since they escaped from Maula prison where they were remanded whilst answering robbery charges in court.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Rodrick Maida has identified the escapees as Nikisi Dauda, 25, and Chande Saidi, 21 while the third suspect has been identified as Mike Maluwa, 36.
According to Maida, the three during nights of 12 and 17 August, 2016 tied watchmen with ropes and went away with K11 million and K4 million at Cape Maclear One Stop Energy Filling Station and NBS bank Mangochi branch respectively.
“The suspects were arrested during night of 2nd September, 2016 at Mangochi Township through a tip from the public after robbing NBS Ntcheu branch,” Maida said.
Police also suspect the three to be behind robberies at Liwonde NBS bank, Malawi Savings Bank Ntaja branch, and TNM Balaka branch.
Meanwhile, Mangochi police station have appealed to the landlords to first of all know their tenants before offering them a house to avoid harbouring criminals.
Dauda comes from Chilipa village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi, Saidi hails from Ambali village, Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima while Maluwa, comes from Kwiputi village, Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi
