A prisoner who is serving his jail term at Nkhotakota Prison was recaptured as he was trying to escape from the correctional facility.
According to Nkhotakota Prison Public Relations Officer Cosmas Meja, the prisoner identified as Yamikani Phiri was among seven inmates who were working at a garden in the district.
“The prisoner is serving four years imprisonment with hard labour term for the offences of burglary, theft and wounding and his sentence is to expire in 2020,” said Meja.
While working at the garden, Phiri started running away but he was rearrested after he fell in a pit. The escapee sustained severe leg injuries and was referred to Nkhotakota District Hospital for medication.
He is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of escaping from Lawful Custody contrary to section 115 of penal code.
