An angry mob looking for instant justice on Friday burned to death a maize thief in Area 36 in Lilongwe.
Another thief however was rescued but he is battling for his life since he suffered serious burns.
The deceased has only been identified as Gibo while the survivor of the mob justice has been identified as Obadiya Banda.
According to an eyewitnesses at the scene, the two suspects were caught red-handed stealing maize in the house of a certain man in the area at around 4am on Friday.
“The owner shouted for help after seeing the thieves and residents in the area responded positively and apprehended the suspects,” said the witness.
The eyewitness said after apprehending the suspects, the angry mob decided to set ablaze the two thieves but one of them escaped and he was rescued.
This is happening a time when the Malawi Police Service continues to condemn mob justice saying it is against the law for citizens to take the law into their hands.
