The newly formed United Transformation Party (UTP) is already facing its first court battle as some members are challenging the party’s leadership.

In contrast to the principle of standing united, members of the newly formed UTP have opposed the choice of Newton Kambala as party president by obtaining a court injunction, restraining him from holding the office.

The members, Janet Chikoko, Charles Mwambyale, Eunice Makangala and Nevert Gondwe are said to have not been happy with the acting president.

The injunction is waiting to be challenged by legal representatives of the interim leader who has been blocked from office for ten days.

United Transformation became the country’s newest party to be registered, taking the number of parties in the country to 51 even though the majority of the parties do not field presidential or parliamentary aspirants during elections.

The party, which is reported to have economist Mathews Chikaonda and self-acclaimed political strategist Humphrey Mvula as some of its members, was established to bring together Malawi’s business captains and other recycled politicians to join the political atmosphere of the country.
