A 28 year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to 14 years in prison with hard labour for sexually assaulting a three year-old girl in Machinga.
The convict identified as Isaac Njaliwa committed the offence of defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the penal code.
Presenting facts in court, police prosecutor Richard Kandeya said on 5th June this year Jaliwa went to the victim’s house to cut a blue gum tree which he wanted to use for house construction.
As he was cutting the tree, the little girl’s parents went out for prayers leaving the 3 year-old with her 11 year-old sister.
The evil-minded Jaliwa later sent the older girl to another village to collect broken plastic pails. Upon returning, the girl found the 28 year-old man forcing himself on the 3 year old girl behind the kitchen and she shouted for help.
The matter was later reported to Nselema police and a medical report from Nainunje health centre proved that the child was raped.
Kandeya pleaded for stiff punishment saying the act traumatised the life of the three year-old. First grade magistrate Esther Phiri then sentenced the man to 14 years in prison with hard labour saying his behaviour was inhuman.
Isaac Njaliwa comes from Chilolo village in the area of traditional authority Kapoloma of Machinga district.
