Police confirmed the arrest.

According to police publicist for the eastern region Sergeant Otilia Kumanga, the suspect has been identified as Hadton Zituna Mkandawire.

She said the issue was revealed after three children of the same family told their parents that the suspect taught them witchcraft and demanded them to kill their parents, an order which shocked the children.

Kumanga said upon revelation of the matter, authorities in the area questioned the suspect and he admitted to have been running a witchcraft school.

The publicist said the police intervened and arrested the man for breaching peace in the area.

“The man is in police custody here in Mangochi district on suspicion to cause havoc in the area and not on witchcraft allegations,” said Kumanga.

Mkandawire hails from Chiteze village in the area of Traditional Authority Makanjira in the district and he will appear before court soon.

However, secular activists have been calling for a review on such laws in Malawi with their latest condemnation of killings of people suspected to be practicing witchcraft.
