Malawi hip-hop group K2B Block has distanced itself from verbal war with fellow artists more especially those from Blantyre arguing that it is just a waste of time and they would risk losing their fan base.

The Lilongwe based group was reported to be at loggerheads with Blantyre urban artists.

This follows the never-ending competition between the country’s two major cities as dwellers from each city consider theirs to be advanced in all aspects. The battle for supremacy pushes some artists to launch into tirades against artists from their competing city.

But in an interview with Malawi24, K2B Block member, KDZ quashed the reports about not seeing eye to eye with fellow artists.

However, he admitted their involvement in a verbal war which has now been reduced to history.

“Passage of time made us realize that exchange of words with fellow artist was not part of us and that it would only waste our time and cut out some of our fans, and then we thought of bringing the controversy to an end,” said KDZ who is also a producer.

The rapper made reference to some local urban music giants who were once involved in such acts but had to reborn with the passage of time.

He said: “It’s something which has to come to an end in one way or the other.” Notable pairs of major urban artists that were once at loggerheads include Lomwe and Tay-Grin as well as Gwamba and Slessor.

Out of all controversies in urban music circles, only Tay-Grin received praise for not responding to any of the provocative songs against him. Although many hip-hop artists rapped him, he laid down vengeance for promotion of Malawi cultural heritage.

True to KDZ’s words, none of the major artists is still flipping old chapters of the book.

The capital city hip-hop giants have a reputation for making entertaining and educative songs which target a wide audience irrespective of age and social-economic status.

Out of all hit songs they have released so far, none includes abusive language against fellow artists.

The Lilongwe lads are currently enjoying massive reception on their new hit Malonda topping the  downloads on music sites in Malawi.
