In a state of the nation address yesterday, Mutharika said police are investigating the matter. The president also stressed that anyone who will be found on the wrong side of the law will surely get locked behind bars.

“I have instructed the police to investigate thoroughly, and take vigorous action. If they catch you, you will go to jail. So you better stop right away,” Mutharika said

In an effort to bring sanity, the law enforcers will be monitoring transactions at all Admarc depots. The move is mainly aimed at sustaining food for Malawians who are under a threat of hunger this year.

Reports indicate that vendors have been making deals with Admarc officials, allowing them to buy maize at night and sell it to poor Malawians at exorbitant prices. This has angered Mutharika hence resorting to action.

Although the president once brushed off reports on hunger, an assessment report revealed the country is facing hunger which may affect about 2.8 million Malawians.

In the national address, the president claimed government has money for purchasing maize therefore maize stocks will be replenished in all Admarc depots.
