At a time when girls in Malawi are bieng urged to pull up their socks on education, breath taking revelations show that self-boarding girls at Luviri Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba district have turned their hostels into “brothels, Malawi24 has established.

When we visited the institution on Thursday, girls confessed that they sleep with men in their houses – which are used as hostels – during night hours in a bid to find pocket money for their daily upkeep.

They told our reporter that since they live away from their school authorities, they trade their business freely without intermissions.

“In fact we thought you were our customer but anyway that’s how we live here. We manage to find our daily upkeeps by trading our bodies,” confessed a 17 year-old Form three girl.

Our reporter found out that the girls are free because they are self-boarding in some tiny houses which are meters away from the school thus teachers are not aware of the girls’ behavior.

“We negotiate with some drivers and strangers who can afford to pay for our cheap services. We just want to find money since sometimes our groceries do not last long.,” added another 16 year-old girl who is in Form two. The situation has since attracted most drivers who travel long distances without enjoying their women because they find their comfort in these school girls. According to information our reporter saw, out of 35 girls who enrol in Form one at the institution, only 9 manage to sit for Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE). “Most of them end up dropping out of school before even reaching Form two. Some flee to trading centres to become prostitutes while some end up being impregnated by their clients,” said Gabriel Chizimba one of the teachers at the school. He added that the situation has not spared most of the community day secondary schools across the district where girls are self-boarding.

Nevertheless, education authorities in the district claimed to be unaware of the problems facing such schools because head teachers do not report the issues to their offices

. District education manager for Mzimba, Lemani Mvula said he is unaware of the state of affairs because no report on the matter has so far reached his office.

“I hear about that from you but before, I didn’t have any idea on that because no report has since reached my office on the same,” he said.

Meanwhile, traditional leaders in the area have urged government and some stakeholders to come in quickly to help overcome the problems.
