Floods to hit Malawi

Malawians must brace for hard times again as the ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has said that the country will again be hit by floods this year.

The announcement follows a 5-day weather forecast released on Monday by the department of climate change and meteorological services.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development signed by Chief Director for Irrigation and Water Development, Sandram Maseru, floods will hit central and southern parts of Malawi.

This is because the central and southern regions of Malawi will be experiencing heavy downpours in the next five days that will likely cause floods in flood prone areas.

Flood await Malawi.

“There is a likelihood of flooding in low lying flood prone areas in Central and Southern Regions, especially areas along lower reaches of Shire, Ruo and Mwanza rivers in the Lower Shire Valley, Domasi, Thondwe and Likangala rivers in Zomba district, Phalombe River in Phalombe district and rivers in the lakeshore districts of Nkhotakota, Salima, Mangochi and Dedza (especially Mtakataka) and Luvulezi-Bwanje Valley in Ntcheu district,” said Maseru in the statement.

The ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has since warned the general public and people living around these areas to be on guard and has advised them to desist from walking or driving through the flooded areas.

Maseru further advised people living close to the river to move to higher grounds and to be careful during the night since it is very impossible to tell the depth of the flooded waters.

“People who have settled too close to river channels, especially in the Lower Shire Valley, are advised to move to higher ground,” Maseru said.

Last year, some parts of the country also experienced floods which left thousands of people homeless and other people injured.
