Malawi Police in Phalombe district on Monday have arrested a 22 year-old man for stealing government drugs.

The man, Chimwemwe Maurisu of Mphonde village Traditional Authority (T/A) Ngabu in Chikhwawa, stole drugs worth over MK841, 500.

Phalombe Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi said the suspect was working under Phalombe District Health Office as a Medical Assistant at Kalinde Health Centre where he is alleged to have failed to account for 69 boxes of LA of different packages and sizes.

“This took place in the period between July 2014 and May 2015. The medical drugs are valued at MK 841, 500 and were being sold to a former sales representative of the Population Services International (PSI), Adriel Jumbe, 36, of Kolore village T/A Santhe in Kasungu. “The said medical drugs were then being sold to private hospitals across the country by Jumbe,” explained Nkhwazi.

Meanwhile, Maurisu is expected to appear before the Phalombe First Grade Magistrate Court soon to answer charges of Theft by Public Servant in accordance with section 283 of the penal code.
