At least 17 families have been displaced after strong winds blew off roofs of houses at Zomba Prison in Malawi’s  old capital city Zomba.

The affected families are currently camping at Prison primary school in the city.

According to a prison officer, Sergeant Inussa Sayezi, the victims need urgent assistance such as food, firewood, mosquito nets, candles, and torches.

Sayezi acknowledged the assistance from prison authorities who have donated various items such as salt and beans as well as one bag of maize and three blankets to each family.

He also thanked Ward Councillor Bamusi for donating K1,500 to each family as a starter pack during this difficult time. Zomba City Council’s (ZCC) department of disaster visited the area on Thursday morning for assessment which is currently underway to establish the extent of damage.

Disaster officer for the City, Lodias Sendaluzi, said his office has received reports that several houses have been affected in the city in areas like Sadzi, Ntiya, Mbedza, Masongola, Namalaka and Zomba Central.

Heavy winds have been destroying houses and other properties in Zomba since the rains started falling in the district last month.
