Shocking revelations have emerged that some Malawian health workers are having a hand in stealing drugs from hospitals and selling them to smugglers.
International media reports indicate that Antiretrovirals (ARVs), painkillers and antibiotics stolen from Malawi hospitals are being traded for money on the streets of Johannesburg in South Africa.
This comes amid innocent citizens’ cry for drugs in hospitals across the country.
The reports also indicate that Thyolo district hospital is one of the health facilities where massive stealing of drugs is taking place.
It appears ARVs are the most stolen of the mentioned drugs with large amounts getting smuggled out of the country on irregular basis.
A local nursing student (name withheld) has confided in Malawi24 that Malawi ARVs are also being sold in neighboring Mozambique.
She said some health workers at Phalombe district hospital steal the drugs.
President Peter Mutharika, during a state of nation address he made when he was opening Parliament, assured Malawians that his government will do its best in bringing sanity among health workers and in dealing with anyone who steal drugs.
In a related development, three people were last week charged for stealing drugs at Chitipa district hospital.

Fellow Malawi ans, this disgrace has scooped away all the true respect that we as citizens were receiving from our hero fellow wel~ mates. In future us Malawi ans will soon get the blame of being the one who are good at doing criminal injustices in this foreign country. indeed here we are abusing our own wives from home, uncontrolled beer drinking that associates with young ones who are under age, or just not too matured to withstand the effects of alcohol. Now everywhere here in South Africa describe us as Prostitutes and concubines, Best noise makers and fighters against fellow country men, people who don’t know why we are here for. Hence we tend to put the blame on Government of Malawi.
