Man dies after beer drinking competition

A Malawian man has been pronounced dead on what was supposed to be a mere alcohol drinking competition among imbibers at a makeshift shabeen outside Wenela bus depot in Blantyre.

Police have confirmed and identified the deceased as Alfred Mofololo. His colleague gained consciousness later.

According to an eyewitness who operates his business on a market where the shabeen is located, said a group of men were participating in a Kachasu drinking competition when two of them suddenly collapsed.

Blantyre police station spokesperson, Elizabeth Divala said the incident was reported by the shabeen owner Lawrence Mvula that Mofolo was taking alcohol on an empty stomach when he collapsed.

“He was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was pronounced dead upon arrival” said Divala.

According to Divala, particulars of Mofolo are not yet known,only that he was a resident of Majiga in Ndirande township in Blantyre.
