Traditional Authority Chapananga of Chikhwawa district has demoted Senior Group Village Headman Singano to a village Headman for allegedly attending a political rally organised by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera at Nchalo Community Ground.

Senior Group Village Headman (SGVH) Singano has since rejected the order saying he still remains SGVH Singano.

Traditional Authority (T/A) Chapananga said his headquarters has relegated SGVH Singano to a mere village headman because he attended the rally without informing him.

He further said that SGVH Singano was not supposed to attend such a rally as it is not a campaigning period for traditional leaders to have the opportunity of attending political rallies.

“The chief must be aware that this is a time to work with the government of the day,” said T/A Chapananga.

But SGVH Singano expressed ignorance about the development saying he has not been officially communicated by T/A Chapananga’s headquarters.

He nonetheless challenged the T/A that he will not accept the demotion saying the decision was arrived at on political grounds.

Commenting on the development, Chancellor College political analyst Joseph Chunga said chief Singano was not wrong to attend the political rally because this is a democratic country and everyone is allowed to attend any function he or she likes.

He however observed that a chief can only be demoted if he involves himself in the affairs of a political party.
