Malawi opposition United Democratic Front Member of Parliament (MP), Shaibu Kaliati who was allegedly caught romping an underage girl last week has been granted bail by police, Parliament says.

Kalaiti was reportedly found in the act at Annies Lodge in Lilongwe.

When speaking in Parliament on Monday, Speaker of the House, Richard Msowoya disclosed that the lawmaker has now been released on bail.

However Msowoya could not give further details on the matter.

At the moment, it is not known yet what charges have been levelled against the legislator.

Kaliati, who is legislator for Machinga Central, is believed to have lured the 16 year-old girl with K6,000.

Jane Kathewera, an administrator of a Facebook group, posted on the group that the UDF MP had been caught with the daughter of a fellow legislator.

According to Kathewera, when he was going to the lodge to meet the Bambino Private School student, Kaliati removed number plates from his vehicle to avoid being identified.

In their discussions, some members of the Facebook group called for the arrest of Kaliati on charges of having sex with a minor while others reasoned that there was consent and Kaliati should be left alone.

The MP reportedly removed a number plate from his vehicle when he was going to the lodge to avoid being identified.

In their discussions, some members of the Facebook group are calling for the arrest of Kaliati for sexual exploitation of a minor.

Others, however, argue that a “sweet 16” girl is mature enough to consent to sex and that she willingly had the intercourse.
