A 34-year-old driver identified as Andrew Sawabu has been arrested in Mangochi for hitting to death a 30-year-old man and stabbing a police officer.
Sawabu was on the run after hitting to death Peter Juma, 30, on July 26, 2022 at Mogas Lodge.
According to Mangochi Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi on this fateful day, Sawabu was driving an unregistered 7 tonne lorry from the direction of Mangochi Boma heading Maldeco.
Upon arrival at Mogas Lodge, he lost control of the motor vehicle due to speeding and swerved to the offside of the road where he hit Juma who was walking heading the same direction.
Due to the impact, Juma sustained severe head injuries and the driver abandoned him at Mangochi District Hospital where Juma died while receiving treatment.
The driver sold the motor vehicle the next day and fled the town.
On the night of November 6, 2022 the night patrol team arrested Sawabu at Soko Trading Centre following a tip from members of the community after he was spotted having a good time.
Sawabu attempted to resist the arrest by producing a knife and stabbed one of the officers on the upper left eye who sustained a cut wound.
Sawabu hails from Saiti Kadzuwa Village Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
