Karonga District Council is being pushed to turn heated debate inside the council chamber into better services for residents, with the district commissioner backing councillors who question decisions and expose weaknesses.
District Commissioner Willard Mwambo made the remarks after the council’s ordinary full council meeting, where councillors scrutinised issues concerning the administration and development of the district.
Mwambo said constructive criticism should not be seen as a threat to the council but as a way of exposing weaknesses and improving decisions made in the interest of residents.
He said robust debate on public-interest issues could help strengthen the council’s operations and ensure that decisions respond effectively to the needs of people in the district.
Council chairperson Councillor Atusaye Mwenefumbo said councillors would continue providing checks and balances to promote transparency, accountability and the smooth running of the local authority.
During the meeting, councillors adopted, with corrections, three service committee reports after identifying areas they said lacked sufficient clarity.
The council said continued scrutiny of committee reports and other public-interest matters would help strengthen decision-making and improve service delivery across Karonga District.
