Malawi’s musical history risks fading with time, but a new initiative is stepping in to keep the country’s iconic sounds and stories alive for generations.
The Ubuntu Music People (UMP) has announced the launch of a new permanent initiative, the UMP Music Heritage Fund, dedicated to preserving and advancing Malawi’s musical heritage.
According to a statement signed by UMP Communications Officer Edgar M’baluku, the new fund is a distinct entity separate from the organization’s annual UMP National Music Heritage Award.
Meanwhile, the UMP National Music Heritage Award for this year is set to honour music legends Michael Yekha, Daniel Kachamba, and Allan Namoko.
To ensure the sustainability of the new initiative, UMP indicated that resources for the Music Heritage Fund will be mobilized through public contributions, corporate sponsorships, grants, and partnerships.
Additionally, the organization will establish a specialized Music Heritage Fund Committee to oversee the fund’s operations.
