Kasungu District Hospital has received water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities and cleaning materials worth K19 million from WaterAid to strengthen efforts against cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The donation, which includes chlorine and tap buckets, was handed over to hospital authorities during a ceremony in Kasungu.

Director of Health and Sanitation Services, Emmanuel Golombe, said the materials are especially needed during the rainy season, when communities face increased cholera risks.

“These are items we need most, especially during this rainy season when most communities are facing cholera threats. Once we distribute these materials, we will be able to promote hygiene and ensure the use of safe water in our health facilities,” he said.

Golombe also highlighted challenges in the health sector, including non-functional ambulances, staff shortages, and limited funding to maintain facilities.

WaterAid Hygiene Behaviour Change Specialist Mariya Soko said the donation is part of efforts to prepare health facilities for emergencies such as flash floods that increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

“Our goal is to ensure that people have access to clean and safe water, especially during this period when floods have increased the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera,” she said.

Since the start of the 2025/2026 rainy season, Kasungu District has recorded five cases of cholera.
