Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has praised the Catholic Women Association (CWA) for its goodwill in restoring the environment by planting trees every year.

Bishop Chamgwera said this at his home in St Anthony Thondwe, where the CWA of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba planted 1,500 trees at his residence.

He said that trees are very important to human life because they help in many ways, such as bringing rain, providing the clean air we breathe, and supplying firewood for cooking.

He therefore urged all women to plant trees in their respective areas so that the environment can be restored to its former state.

Bishop Chamgwera also said that women are the pillars of the Church and the nation because they understand people’s problems, even more than men in some cases.

He commended them for the good work they do in developing the Church in Zomba Diocese.

He further thanked the CWA for coming to plant trees at his home, for wishing him a happy New Year, and for presenting him with various gifts.

He asked the members of the CWA to keep him in their daily prayers so that he may remain strong.

“Pray for me and also pray for Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima so that he may serve the Diocese of Zomba well,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson of the CWA in the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Christina Lakiyoni, said they decided to plant trees at the home of Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera after noticing that the trees surrounding his house were diminishing, and they wanted to restore them.

She added that another reason for visiting his home was to spend time with him, present him with gifts, and wish him a happy new year.

In his remarks, the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Fr. Bernard Chipole, who represented Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima, thanked members of CWA for planting trees at the home of Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera.

He said that Bishop Chaima always appreciates the CWA because it consistently takes the lead in environmental restoration efforts within the Diocese of Zomba.
