Persistent heavy rains in Mzimba District have caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, and buildings, disrupting transportation and threatening access to essential services, including healthcare.
Member of Parliament for Mzimba Perekezi Constituency, Fikani Ulunji Nyirenda, has expressed concern that the continued rainfall has severely affected mobility in several parts of the district, making it increasingly difficult for patients to access Mzimba District Hospital.
Nyirenda said some roads have been cut off due to flooding and erosion, forcing residents to use longer and unsafe routes or, in some cases, remain stranded within their communities.
A similar situation has been reported in Mzimba Solora Constituency, where Member of Parliament Rightwell Mahowe said heavy rains have destroyed several structures in the Mhalaunda area and damaged the Ngori Bridge, further complicating movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Mahowe noted that the damage to the bridge has disrupted economic activities and limited access to social services, as communities struggle to transport goods and reach health facilities.
In response to the situation, the two legislators have announced plans to work closely with the M’mbelwa District Council to carry out temporary repairs on affected roads and bridges as an immediate measure to ease the suffering of local communities.
Meanwhile, the MPs have urged residents to remain calm and exercise caution during the rainy season, particularly by avoiding crossing flooded rivers and damaged bridges.
Speaking separately, M’mbelwa District Council spokesperson Joel Phiri said the council will conduct an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and work with the Members of Parliament to find lasting solutions as authorities continue to evaluate the impact of the ongoing rains.
