Following severe floods in Mwenyekondo, Area 36, First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust has donated food aid to 500 families struggling to feed their children and elderly relatives after heavy rains destroyed homes and food supplies.
Beam Trust chairperson Dingiswayo Jere said the First Lady prioritised support for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and child-headed households, when directing the relief effort.
“The First Lady decided that we needed to help people affected by the floods here in Area 36, especially focusing on the elderly and child-headed households,” Jere said during the handover ceremony.
Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City M’buka, Lincoln Liwonde, commended the Trust for its swift response, noting that the donations would provide crucial relief to families struggling to recover from the disaster.
The donated items included maize flour, beans, cooking oil, and other essential foodstuffs aimed at sustaining families during this critical period.
Beneficiary Esmie Galasiteni said the floods had destroyed her household’s food supplies. She added that the donation would help ensure her family has meals for the coming weeks.
Local authorities reported that continuous heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, flooding homes and damaging property, particularly in low-lying areas of Mwenyekondo.
Social welfare officers have been monitoring the situation, identifying the most vulnerable households to ensure that aid reaches those most in need.
Beam Trust’s intervention forms part of the First Lady’s broader commitment to respond promptly to natural disasters and emergencies affecting communities across Malawi.
Meanwhile, government and non-governmental agencies continue coordinating support to mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters in urban and peri-urban areas.
