Traffic has been fully restored on the Nkhotakota-Dwangwa-Kasitu (M005) and Nkhotakota-Kasungu (M018) roads following the completion of major temporary repair works by the Roads Authority.

The Authority confirmed that the final affected stretch at Wozi on the M018 road was opened to traffic, effectively reconnecting all sections that had been cut off by severe damage.

Other affected points along both routes had already been reopened over the past one to two weeks, easing pressure on road users as works progressed toward completion.

The damage was extensive, involving washouts ranging from 20 to 80 metres and creating ten major openings along the two critical transport corridors.

Releasing the update yesterday, Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer Eng. Ammiel Champiti, PhD, said the completion of the temporary works had restored connectivity and improved mobility for communities and businesses that depend on the roads.

“We are pleased that these temporary interventions have successfully re-established access and movement along these vital routes, despite the scale of the damage that was experienced,” Champiti said.

He added that the Authority will continue to pursue permanent rehabilitation works in line with approved engineering standards and funding processes, while thanking stakeholders and the public for their cooperation during the repairs.
