The High Court has disqualified former Malawi vice president Dr Cassim Chilumpha from contesting in the May elections.
High Court judge Mike Tembo has informed the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to remove Chilumpha’s name from the list of presidential candidates for the elections because he cannot represent the Tikonze People’s Movement (TPM).
Tembo said Chilumpha’s presidential bid was not sponsored by TPM.
The decision follows a legal battle between Chilumpha and members of the TPM who accused their leader of presenting nominations to MEC without the alliance’s approval.
The group already endorsed UTM presidential candidate Saulos Chilima fort the elections.
This means there are now seven presidential candidates who will contest in the 2019 elections.
They are Chilima, President Peter Mutharika, Lazarus Chakwera, Hardwick Kaliya, Peter Kuwani, Atupele Muluzi and John Chisi.
