Despite former head of state Joyce Banda being mentioned several times by cashgate convicts and suspects to be a big fish in cashgate, Vice President of Malawi Saulos Chilima defended Banda on the corruption allegations.

Speaking during BBC’s Hardtalk, Chilima said Banda’s corruption record was not poor but acknowledged that there was massive looting during her tenure.

Chilima also faulted claims that Banda’s regime was the most corrupt saying looting of public funds happened in all regimes after Malawi adopted democracy.

But Chilima’s sentiments have raised eyebrows among citizens who feel the Vice President could be defending corruption in the country.

Commenting on an article that this publication had, some citizens wondered why  Chilima was shielding Banda.

“This man aah, why defending the mother of cashgate,” wrote David Mwandimba

While Weeklee Mwale wrote: “Birds of same feathers, they cannot betray each other.”

Others said the move to defend Chilima reflects possible political ties between Chilima’s United Transformation Movement (UTM) and Banda’s People’s Party (PP).

Chilima is reported to have had a meeting with Banda on the basis of sharing same vision.
