A 10-year-old girl was on Saturday struck to death by a car as she was crossing the Monkey Bay-Golomoti road at Malembo in Mangochi.
Mangochi deputy police publicist Amina Daudi identified the young girl as Emily Laija.
According to Daudi, Daniel Chimubwembwa, 43, was driving a Mazda Bongo registration number LA6963 from the direction of Monkey Bay heading to Golomoti with 8 passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at Saiti village due to overspeeding he hit Emily, who is a Standard 2 pupil at Chilumba Primary School as she was crossing from left to right hand side of the road,” Daudi told Malawi24.
“Following the impact Emily sustained multiple fractures of the right leg and severe head injury and died on the spot. The driver and all passengers escaped with no injuries,” Daudi added.
The driver fled the scene of the accident and then abandoned the vehicle at Golomoti Trading Centre but he was later arrested by Monkey Bay Police who were tipped by well-wishers.
The deceased hailed from Simon village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi district.
Police in Mangochi are advising the drivers to always follow road safety measures in order to reduce road accidents in the district.
