Police in Dedza have arrested a 32-year-old Mozambican man for attempting to register as a Malawian in the ongoing national identity registration exercise.

Dowa police spokesperson sub inspector Edward Kabango has identified the man as
Patrick Machaka.

According to Kabango, the police got a tip that the suspect is not a Malawian although he managed to produce two Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) identity cards for 2008 and 2013.

“Machaka went to Umbwi registration centre and lied that he comes from Kapalamula village in the area of Traditional Authority Kachere in the district,” Kabango said.

He has since been charged with furnishing false information for the purpose of obtaining registration which is contrary to section 43 of the National Registration Bureau Act and attracts a maximum sentence of 10 years.
