Reckless driver arrested for causing death

Police in Mzimba district have arrested a 24-year-old man for causing death due to reckless driving.

Mzimba Police publicist, Peter Botha, identified the suspect as Fletcher Mwafulirwa who committed the offence on Tuesday afternoon.

Botha said Mwafulirwa, who was driving a Toyota Sienta registration number MZ 1112, was coming from the direction of Mzimba Trading Centre heading to Chimkusa.

Along the way he hit a 45-year-old man who wanted to cross the road.
Botha identified the deceased as Phaniso Hunga of Stonya Vinkhumbo village, Paramount Chief M’mbelwa in the district.

Mzimba police report indicates that Hunga was crossing the road when he was hit.

He was later pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzimba District Hospital.

Fletcher Mwafulirwa hails from Mwanyeshya village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga district.

He will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving.

Meanwhile, the directorate of road traffic in the country has emphasized its seriousness in dealing with road accidents in Malawi by the introduction of new laws and stiff penalties especially on careless drivers.
