A 41 year-old woman and a child aged five have died after a Chibuku truck hit them at Ndirande Township in the commercial city of Blantyre.

Blantyre police assistant spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said the vehicle, a Nissan UD truck with registration number BQ 1027, hit the woman who was popularly known as “Nana” when she was escorting her daughter to school on Monday.

Mayawo added that the truck which was being driven by Robert Betland, 38, also forced its way through a fence and stopped in the compound.

When police rushed to the scene, they found empty crates of beer as people were seen enjoying the beer near the site of the accident.

The police managed to rescue the driver of the truck from angry Ndirande residents who wanted to manhandle him.

The deceased woman and the child hailed from Tombondera village, Traditional Authority (TA) Chapananga in Chikwawa district while the driver comes from Chiwere village, TA Machinjiri in Blantyre.
